The following information from Judy Andis in New Zealand (a descendant) - Thank You:
John Freebody married Philippa Spencer Knowles in 1853 in Newbury Berkshire, Philippa's mothers maiden name was Southby her mother was Alice Southby who's father was Charles Southby ( he is featured in the British nobility)
In 1883 John emigrated to New Zealand (9 years after Philippa) where he farmed the Waira rapa. No record has yet been found of John Freebody arriving in New Zealand but it is known that he bought 36 acres of land in Taratahi ( a little area just South of Greytown and about that time Philippa Freebody appears on the Carterton Rolls ( another little adjoining town in that area)
Philippa Freebody came out to New Zealand in aprox 1874 with a baby girl also named Philippa Freebody, and the little girl was placed in a convent home until the mother got settled. No record of a Philippa Freebody arriving on a ship to New Zealand has yet been found, although there is a record of a Philippa Southby roughly the same age and two Southby men (her cousins ). Philippa probably used her Mothers maiden name when she immigrated with the baby and stayed with her cousins until she was settled.
In 1882 Alice and Ann Freebody arrived on the ship the Euterpe at Wellington which is aprox 100 miles south of the Wairarapa. Alice married a James Henry Moody in 1886, Ann Freebody married a Fred Lovell in Australia in aprox 1890. She died in Australia in aprox 1926
John Freebody his wife and their daughter ( Philippa) moved out to Te Wharau where Alice and James Moody had purchased land and built a house. They (the Freebody's) stayed in a tent on the land this was about 1894. Soon after their arrival Philippa Freebody, John's wife fell and hit her head causing a fractured skull and death. John died in the Greytown hospital, New Zealand.
